- In my initial incarnation as a rust proofer 37 years ago I would do a lot of these sorts of cars, particularly jags. Pre about 1980 cars would rust in door clinches. boot lids, bonnet lids and sills and of course it was important to inject those areas. Post 1980 ``'modern" cars don't corrode in these areas now, due to improved modern construction methods. So in my earlier incarnation I would have injected these areas as a matter of course. But now that some corrosion has set in, corrosion repairs are in order and my treatment would make repairs impossible to carry out properly. (The good news is that the underbody was unmolested and in fairly good conditions so my treatment was therefore very indicated). What is the solution for these areas where some rust has set in? In the boot lid the rust will be in the folds and in the doors it will be in the clinches so difficult to make a permanent repair where rust is not going to come through again. The rust is not severe and I think it has to be accepted as "patina" on a 57 year old car. As long as the car is kept warm and dry I don't think it will get much worse in the short term. I think the proper solution in due course is to take off the doors and boot lid,, remove all the fittings and get them acid dipped by one of the 3 main specialists who do this work. A phosphoric acid bath will completely dissolve any rust. This is a valuable car. Any corrosion repairs should be carried out by a recognised, top of the line classic car restorer like "Romance of Rust" and not your local body shop. (Note: these are just my opinions, seek other advice).
